How It's Spread

Meningitis is contagious. It is spread by people coughing, sneezing, and intamate kissing. The Bacteria doesn't live for very long out side of the body, so it can't be spread from water supplies, swimming pools, or buildings.

Sometimes it can be caught by spending too much time with someone who has meningitis. People living in the same house, staying at the same day-care center, or anyone with direct contact with a patients oral secretions (boyfriend/girlfriend) would be at risk of acquiring the infection.
