People
- In 1980 United States census reported that Colorado had 2,889,735 people. The population had increased 31% over the 1970 figure, 2,209,596.
- About four of every five live in one of the states six metropolitan area-Denver, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Greeley.
- This state has five cities with a population over 100,000.
- These states are, in order of size, Denver, Colorado Spring, Aurora, Lakewood, and Pueblo.
- Most of Colorado's cities grew up near the eastern edge of the mountains.
- Alot of Colorado's people are Protestants, but Roman Catholics form the largest religious group.
Education
- The first school in colorado was opened in 1859 by O.J. Goldrick.
- His students were children of gold miners in the Cherry Creek area (now Denver).
- They appiont a commissioner of education to direct the department.
- Colorado's first public library was established in Denver in 1860.
- The Denver Art Museum features an Indian and native arts collections.
Goverment
- The constitution of Colorado was adopted in 1876.
- All amendments must be approved by the people in an election.
- Amendments may be proposed by a two-thirds vote of the state legislature, by a petition of the voters, or by a constitutional convention.
- The governor and lieutenant governor of Colorado are elected as a term to four-year terms.
- voters cast a single vote for both officials.
- under a constitutional amendment approved in 1966, the state reorganized the executive branch.
