Hi! Welcome to the History of Hollywood web page. I hope you enjoy your visit as you find what you need or want to know.

Before Hollywood came of being, most movies were produced in New York City and New Jersey. Some were also made in Chicago, Florida, and elsewhere, depending on the type of climate and scenery that was needed for the film.
As the industry revolutionized, filmmakers began to work more and more in southern California. Here, the climate was suitable for year-round outdoor filming, and there was a wide variety of scenery.
About the time that World War I started in Europe in 1914, many companies had established studios around and in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. When the war ended in 1918, American movies became dominant worldwide, and the hame "Hollywood" came to stand for the values and style of American movies.
